I always recall 2009 as the year when opportunities opened up for me. This was the year I first joined Moving The Goalposts. My name is Christine Rehema Kaingu. I live with my parents and I have been playing football since I was in class four. I was attracted by the stories I heard in the community of how girls’ lives were transformed through playing football in Moving The Goalposts. Not all families were happy that girls’ lives were being transformed in my community. They believed that football could only be played by boys. I also knew of some of my neighbours who would not allow their daughters to play football because they had hidden agendas. Some of them wanted to marry them off and others wanted to take them to nearby towns to work as domestic workers. One day, I saw one of them discouraging my mother when she…

This year’s theme focuses on “Literacy teaching and learning in the COVID_19 crisis and beyond,” especially on the role of educators and the changing methods of teaching. The recent COVID_19 crisis has disrupted the learning of youth and adults globally, with most learning institutions and programs having being suspended. We are cognizant of the fact that more youth and adults in the world especially the most vulnerable groups, still cannot access education and literacy programmes. Literacy is a fundamental human right and the basis for any individual’s ability to learn. It is essential for social and human development and provides individuals with skills to transform their lives and society. As we celebrate the day, we pledge our commitment towards promoting access to quality education and learning opportunities to girls and young women. As an organization, we managed to develop interventions that have ensured our literacy programmes continue to reach our beneficiaries during the…

Football can be a lifeline to so many people. It is more than just a game, it’s a connection between millions of people around the world. It is passion, it is perseverance, it is dedication, it is happiness, it is heartache- but most of all, football is a community. In 2019, Australian and Atletico Madrid midfielder, Alex Chidiac, joined Common Goal, a movement of professional football players with a shared mission to build a future in which football becomes the world’s greatest catalyst for social change.  She pledged 1% of her salary to support Moving the Goalpost’s (MTG), a unique sport for development organization that uses football to empower over nine thousand girls in the rural and urban areas of Kenya’s Coastal region.  A girl born into a poor family in these regions inevitably enters a cycle of poverty. A girl in these families is less likely to be educated…

A thermostat is a component which senses the temperature of a system and regulates temperature of a room or device. This is unlike the thermometer which just measures the room temperature. On the third Sunday of the June we shall commemorate the role and impact of fathers and father figures in our lives and those of children in general. I allude the impact of a father to that of a thermostat. The following real life story will illustrate more: In one of my counseling sessions with a client, I had this rare and touching encounter of a boy who was yearning for father’s words of appreciation in his life. The boy had been referred to me by the school administration to counsel him because his academic performance had nosedived.
